The Engelman's Bakery was founded in 1983 by Sammy Engelman and his sister Miriam Engelman Gur-Lavi.
Both Sammy and his sister Miriam have the bakery business in their blood. Their parents ran a bakery in their native Germany, and in 1961, immigrated to New York where they ran a full-line retail bakery.
Working alongside their parents, the Engelman children were accustomed to the aromas of fermented dough and caramelized sugar. Sammy, still in college in 1981, had owned and operated his own New York bakery since the late 1970s. He sold the bakery in 1981 to move to Atlanta, where his sister had relocated earlier. Unlike New York, Atlanta was not well stocked with retail bakeries, and he saw a business opportunity in this underserved area.
Sammy Engelman felt confident about his move from New York to Atlanta to run a bakery. "We literally grew up in the bakery", says Miriam, who agreed that her brother should try the Atlanta market. "We have been in the bakery business for generations. That is our family heritage".
In 1983 a full-line retail bakery was opened. "At first, we tried to go down the road that we knew, and sell everything from cakes to cookies to bread, one customer at a time", Sammy recalls. Atlanta's population was booming in the 1980s, and its residents' tastes grew more cosmopolitan. The Engelmans eventually stopped making cakes and cookies to focus on bread and rolls. The retail operation gradually evolved into a 100% wholesale business. Production expanded into every available square foot of space.
In 1997, The Engelman's Bakery relocated to their current facility in Norcross, GA., where Sammy, his sister, Miriam and Brother in law Dr. Meir Gur-Lavi constructed a 46,000-sq.-ft. plant.
